The U.S. government closed its 2009 fiscal year with a record 1.417 trillion dollar budget deficit.
The deficit was some 962 billion dollars higher than the prior year and amounted to 10 percent of US gross domestic product (GDP), the highest since 1945.
When Barack Obama was sworn into office the federal deficit for this year stood at $422 billion. At the end of October, it stood at $1.42 trillion. The total national debt also soared to $7.5 trillion at the end of October 2009, up from $6.3 trillion shortly after Inauguration Day.
Among the bills listed here that Brad Sherman voted for are the spending bills that contributed to that deficit.
When Barack Obama was sworn into office, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, unemployment stood at 7.6%. As of Nov 30, 2009 it is 10%.

BILL TITLE: TARP Reform and Accountability Act
In response to concerns that the first $350 billion released under the Troubled Assets Relief Program (TARP) created by the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008 (HR 1424) had not been administered with enough oversight, Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.) introduced the TARP Reform and Accountability Act (H.R. 384) on January 9, 2009, which would establish stricter oversight rules on the second $350 billion dollars in TARP funding. These include a requirement that all institutions receiving TARP money file quarterly reports on their use of the money, restrictions on merger and acquisition activity among TARP recipients, stricter limits on executive compensation for employees of recipient firms, and the expansion of the Financial Stability Oversight Board. Since January 2009, CBO has raised its estimate of the net cost (on a present-value basis) of the transactions covered by the TARP by $152 billion for 2009 and by $15 billion for 2010
